Small Comfort on My Shoulder II어깨위 작은 위로 II
Small Comfort on My Shoulder II is a relief showing a boy holding back tears with his eyes squeezed shut, and a grey cat clinging to his shoulder. In his furrowed brow, drooping mouth and flushed cheeks, you can feel the tears about to burst out.
The cat presses close to his shoulder as if hugging his neck with its small front paws, and its long tail rises straight toward the sky beyond the picture. Not asking whether he is all right, simply leaning in close, it offers a comfort deeper than any words.
It shares its composition with the paired Small Comfort on My Shoulder I, but this child holds tears instead of laughter. The cat, in the very same place, shows a presence that stays beside us unchanged in joy and in sorrow.
The greatest comfort may not be words but the warmth of someone who stays. The work speaks of the tenderness of a small being that says: it's all right to cry — I won't go anywhere until your tears have dried.
A boy holds back his tears while a grey cat clings to his shoulder in quiet comfort.
Do you remember comfort that simply stayed beside you without a word?
Eyes squeezed shut, a furrowed brow, a drooping mouth. In this delicate dakjongi expression, feel the tears about to burst out.
Pressed close to his neck with its little paws, the cat is the picture of comfort that stays without asking questions.
The tail stretching straight beyond the picture looks like a small hope pointing upward, even in heavy sorrow.
Seen with Small Comfort on My Shoulder I, the humming child, and The Day Laughter Perched on Top, the child laughing with a cat on her head, the story of comfort in joy and sorrow is complete.
Recall a presence that silently stayed with you on a hard day, and the comfort its warmth gave you.
An acoustic ballad about the cat leaning on the shoulder of a boy holding back tears — comfort given through warmth instead of words.
Everyone has had moments when they could not even cry out loud and had to hold it all in. At such times, the greatest comfort was never grand words.
The cat in this work doesn't ask the boy if he is all right. It simply wraps its little paws around his neck and stays close, breathing softly. With that one small warmth, a heart that seemed about to crumble slowly finds its place again.
In the same spot where the humming child sat in the first work, this time I placed a child holding back tears. Knowing there is someone who offers their shoulder just the same in joy and in sorrow — that alone can carry us through today.
I hope you will remember the quiet comfort you once received as you stand before this work.
Three works of the cat series, in which a small cat keeps a child company — from shoulder to the top of the head — through humming, tears and laughter.
