When the Forsythia Blooms

When the Forsythia Blooms

When the Forsythia Blooms captures a single spring scene from childhood inside a small window — the wooden frame. Yellow forsythia petals scatter on the wind across a hanji-coloured background, and beneath them a girl stands shyly.

With braided hair, a white jeogori and a dark skirt, she holds a bunch of wildflowers and smiles with her eyes closed. Were they flowers she meant to give someone, or ones she has just received? We cannot tell, but her tightly closed fingers and slightly tilted shoulders hold feelings she could not put into words.

The petals scattered across the upper part of the picture look like fragments of laughter spreading into the air whenever the wind ruffles it. Each petal is shaped by hand from dakjongi and attached one by one; up close, the soft grain of the paper and its delicate shadows come alive like spring sunlight.

Laughter shared with a friend on a country path, an afternoon spreading yellow along a stone wall. This work quietly calls back the spring of those days that lingers somewhere in all our memories.

Artist's note

Each time the wind ruffles the air, the petals scattering softly through it are like the fragments of innocent laughter we once shared on country paths, bringing back the spring of our childhood.

When I was young, spring always arrived in yellow first. As forsythia began to spread along the walls, we would take the long way home from school to pick flowers, laugh for no reason, and roam the paths until the sun went down.

The little bouquet in the child's hand holds both the wish to give it to someone and the shyness that kept her from doing so. I thought that clumsy heart might be the purest spring we have lost.

While I shaped each petal from dakjongi and attached it, I too felt again the wind of those long-forgotten days.

I hope you will pause in front of this work for a moment, and meet again the spring of your own childhood that may still be blooming yellow in your heart.
