The Space Whale's Voyage
The Space Whale's Voyage began with the endless universe imagined in childhood while looking up at the night sky. In that bottomless dark, the artist wondered what it would look like if the gentlest, largest being in the world carried us safely along.
The space whale in this work is no ordinary animal. It is a guardian that watches over children, and a great ark that carries dreams and imagination to faraway worlds. On its back ride two little astronauts. They are not afraid of the dark; they gaze at the night sky as if it were a wide ocean, and carry on their game of fishing for stars and passing the moon to one another.
Deep nebulae and glittering starlight spread across the whale's body. This universe is not one fixed place but the Milky Way each child carries in their heart. The starlight may be a dream not yet named, a memory long treasured, or a childhood fantasy we long to meet again.
The whale does not stay inside the frame of the canvas; it swells outward as if swimming free. This three-dimensional form shows an imagination that reaches beyond the flat boundaries of everyday life. Viewers see a single cosmic scene from the front, yet follow the whale's movement beyond the work and begin to imagine stories of their own.
As we grow up, we forget the universe and the great whale we once held in our hearts. This work asks us to pause for a moment, and asks:
Two little astronauts fish for the moon and a star from the back of a whale swimming through the galaxy.
What kind of Milky Way stretches across your heart right now?
The whale is not just an animal travelling through space; it is a gentle guardian and an ark that carries the children safely.
The two little astronauts are not lost in the dark. They sail the night sky like an ocean, fishing for stars and handing each other the moon.
The nebulae and starlight wrapping the whale stand for the unique world of dreams and imagination each child holds inside.
The whale's sculpted body breaking out of the frame shows the work refusing to stay flat, expanding freely beyond the limits of the everyday.
In front of this work, recall your own childhood, a game you had forgotten, and the one small star still shining in your heart.
A song about meeting, one night, the space whale we forgot as we grew up. Listen while you look at the work.
When I looked up at the night sky as a child, my imagination always drifted beyond the endless universe. In that pitch-black darkness with no end in sight, I wondered what it would be like if the gentlest, largest being in the world carried us safely along.
In that imagining, the whale became more than a creature of the sea: it became a guardian watching over children, and a great ark carrying their dreams and imagination into unknown worlds.
The little astronauts on the whale's back are not afraid of the dark. To them the night sky is no longer distant and daunting, but a wide ocean they can sail as they please. There they fish for stars and pass the moon to each other, lost in innocent play.
In the deep nebulae and glittering starlight around the whale's body, I placed the Milky Way each child dreams of. Every child carries a different light and a different story. For one it may be a dream not yet met; for another, a memory they never want to forget; for someone else, a landscape of the heart they hope to return to one day.
The whale, rising out of the canvas as if swimming beyond its frame, stands for freedom and an imagination that reaches past flat, everyday life. It does not stay inside the picture; it swims slowly between the stars toward a wider world. I hoped our imagination, too, would follow that movement and stretch far beyond the boundaries of the everyday.
As we grow up, we all forget the universe and the great whale we once held in our hearts. Amid the tasks we must finish and the realities we are used to, childhood fantasies quietly retreat to the deepest corners of the heart.
I hope you will pause for a moment in front of this work, and remember the pure fantasies of childhood you had forgotten — the heart that fished for stars and passed along the moon — and the Milky Way of your own you have kept deep inside.
Perhaps a space whale is still swimming slowly within us. I hope you will climb onto its back, carry your own small light, and once more travel through the endless world of imagination.
