「별자리 — Cancer」는 별자리 연작 가운데 게자리를 담은 작품입니다. 푸른빛 성운이 흐르는 밤하늘 위쪽에서 기다란 밧줄 하나가 내려오고, 주황색 원피스를 입은 아이가 그 줄을 두 손으로 붙잡은 채 매달려 있습니다. 하얗게 꼬불꼬불한 머리칼의 아이는 맨발을 허공에 늘어뜨리고, 한 손을 별 쪽으로 뻗고 있습니다.
액자 속 조명이 켜지면 아이 곁의 밤하늘에 다섯 개의 별이 불을 밝히며 게자리의 모양이 떠오릅니다. 줄을 붙잡고 별 가까이 오르려는 아이의 모습은 마치 달빛을 타고 그네를 타는 것처럼 보입니다.
이 작품은 아래의 사자자리 작품과 위아래로 쌓아 함께 설치됩니다. 아래 액자 위에 올라선 아이가 위로 손을 뻗고 있어, 줄에 매달린 이 아이가 떨어지더라도 받아 줄 누군가가 있다는 이야기가 완성됩니다.
게자리는 단단한 껍질 속에 여린 마음을 품은 별자리로, 집과 보금자리, 그리고 소중한 이를 지키는 마음을 상징합니다. 작품은 멀리 별까지 떠나더라도 돌아갈 곳이 있기에 흔들려도 괜찮다고 이야기합니다.
Constellation — Cancer is the Cancer piece in the constellation series. A long rope descends from the top of a night sky flowing with blue nebulae, and a child in an orange dress hangs from it, gripping it with both hands. With curly white hair, the child dangles bare feet in the air and stretches one hand toward the stars.
When the light inside the frame comes on, five stars light up in the sky beside the child and the shape of Cancer appears. Holding the rope to climb closer to the stars, the child looks as if swinging on a moonbeam.
This work is installed stacked above the Leo piece. The child standing on top of the frame below reaches upward, completing the story: even if this child on the rope should fall, someone is there to catch them.
Cancer holds a tender heart inside a hard shell, and stands for home, shelter, and the will to protect those we love. The work says that even if we travel as far as the stars, it is all right to sway, because there is somewhere to return to.

그리스 신화에서 영웅 헤라클레스가 머리 아홉 달린 괴물 히드라와 싸울 때, 여신 헤라가 작은 게 한 마리를 보내 헤라클레스의 발을 물게 했다고 해요. 게는 금세 밟히고 말았지만, 헤라는 자신을 위해 용감하게 싸운 작은 게를 하늘에 올려 별자리로 만들어 주었습니다. 가장 작은 존재의 가장 큰 용기를 기억하는 별자리예요.
6월 22일 무렵부터 7월 22일 무렵에 태어난 사람의 별자리로, 물의 별자리이며 달이 지배 행성입니다. 단단한 껍질 속에 여린 마음을 품고, 가족과 보금자리를 소중히 여기며 사랑하는 이를 끝까지 지키는 성향을 상징한다고 해요.
황도 12궁 가운데 가장 희미한 별자리로, 우리나라에서는 봄밤 남쪽 하늘의 쌍둥이자리와 사자자리 사이에서 볼 수 있어요. 한가운데에는 '벌집 성단(프레세페)'이라 불리는 별무리가 뿌옇게 빛납니다. 북회귀선을 'Tropic of Cancer'라 부르는 것도 옛날 하짓날 해가 이 별자리 방향에 있었기 때문이에요. 낮이 가장 긴 여름의 문을 여는 별자리입니다.
In Greek myth, when the hero Heracles fought the nine-headed Hydra, the goddess Hera sent a small crab to pinch his foot. The crab was soon crushed underfoot, but Hera placed it in the sky as a constellation for fighting so bravely on her behalf — a constellation that remembers the greatest courage of the smallest creature.
It is the sign of those born from around 22 June to 22 July — a water sign ruled by the Moon. It is said to stand for a tender heart within a hard shell, a love of family and home, and a will to protect loved ones to the end.
It is the faintest constellation of the zodiac, seen in Korea on spring nights between Gemini and Leo in the southern sky. At its centre glows the hazy star cluster called the Beehive (Praesepe). The Tropic of Cancer takes its name from the sun standing in this constellation at the summer solstice long ago — the constellation that opens the door to summer, when the days are longest.

게자리의 아이에게는 하늘에서 내려온 밧줄 하나를 쥐여 주었습니다. 별에 닿고 싶은 마음은 크지만, 아직 발은 허공에 떠 있는 아이입니다.
게자리는 단단한 껍질 속에 여린 마음을 품은 별자리라고 합니다. 높이 오르는 일은 늘 조금 무섭지요. 그래도 그 두려움을 껍질 속에 살짝 넣어 두고, 아이는 줄을 붙잡고 한 뼘씩 별 쪽으로 다가갑니다.
이 작품은 사자자리 작품과 위아래로 쌓아 두었습니다. 아래에 선 아이가 위의 아이를 향해 손을 뻗고 있지요. 멀리 떠나더라도 돌아갈 집이 있고, 줄을 놓쳐도 받아 줄 손이 있다는 것. 그것이 우리를 더 높이 오르게 하는 힘이라고 생각했습니다.
흔들리는 날이 오더라도, 여러분 곁에도 그런 손이 있다는 것을 기억하시기 바랍니다.
To the Cancer child, I gave a rope lowered from the sky. The child longs to reach the stars, but their feet are still dangling in the air.
Cancer is said to hold a tender heart inside a hard shell. Climbing high is always a little frightening. Still, tucking that fear gently inside the shell, the child holds on to the rope and edges closer to the stars, hand span by hand span.
I stacked this work above the Leo piece. The child standing below reaches up toward the child above. That even if we travel far, there is a home to return to, and even if we let go of the rope, there is a hand to catch us — I thought that is the strength that lets us climb higher.
Even when a day comes when you sway, I hope you will remember that there is a hand like that beside you, too.
