「별자리 — Leo」는 별자리 연작 가운데 사자자리를 담은 작품입니다. 푸른 성운이 굽이치는 밤하늘을 품은 액자 위에, 초록색 옷을 입은 하얀 머리의 아이가 올라서 있습니다. 아이는 한쪽 무릎을 짚고 몸을 기울인 채, 다른 한 손을 위로 활짝 뻗으며 환하게 웃고 있습니다.
아이가 손을 뻗는 곳에는 위에 쌓인 게자리 작품이 있습니다. 그곳에는 하늘에서 내려온 줄에 매달린 아이가 있지요. 아래의 아이는 액자 밖, 가장 높은 곳에 먼저 올라서서 흔들리는 친구에게 "걱정 마, 내가 있어"라고 말하는 듯합니다.
액자 속 조명이 켜지면 밤하늘에 별들이 불을 밝히며 사자자리의 모양이 떠오릅니다. 사자의 머리를 그리는 별들은 거꾸로 된 물음표 모양으로 이어져, 마치 용기 내는 아이의 등을 비춰 주는 것처럼 보입니다.
사자자리는 한여름의 해가 지배하는 별자리로, 용기와 너그러움, 따뜻한 마음을 상징합니다. 작품은 사자처럼 크게 울지 못해도 해처럼 뜨거운 마음으로 누군가에게 먼저 손을 내미는 것, 그것이 가장 큰 용기라고 이야기합니다.
Constellation — Leo is the Leo piece in the constellation series. On top of a frame holding a night sky of swirling blue nebulae stands a white-haired child in green. Leaning forward with one hand on a knee, the child stretches the other hand high and beams.
Where the child reaches is the Cancer piece stacked above, with a child hanging from a rope lowered from the sky. The child below, having climbed first to the highest spot outside the frame, seems to be telling the swaying friend, "Don't worry, I'm here."
When the light inside the frame comes on, stars light up across the night sky and the shape of Leo appears. The stars outlining the lion's head join in the shape of a backward question mark, as if shining on the back of a child finding courage.
Leo is the constellation ruled by the midsummer sun, and stands for courage, generosity and a warm heart. The work says that even if we cannot roar like a lion, reaching out first to someone with a heart as warm as the sun is the greatest courage of all.

그리스 신화에서 네메아 골짜기에는 어떤 칼과 화살도 뚫지 못하는 사자가 살았다고 해요. 영웅 헤라클레스가 열두 가지 시련의 첫 번째로 이 사자와 맞서 맨손으로 물리쳤고, 사자는 하늘에 올라 별자리가 되었습니다. 바로 옆의 게자리도 헤라클레스와 싸운 작은 게였으니, 두 별자리는 같은 영웅 이야기 속에서 이웃이 된 셈이에요.
7월 23일 무렵부터 8월 22일 무렵에 태어난 사람의 별자리로, 불의 별자리이며 태양이 지배 행성입니다. 용기와 자신감, 너그러움, 그리고 주변을 환하게 비추는 따뜻한 마음을 상징한다고 해요.
우리나라에서는 봄밤 남쪽 하늘 높이 보이는 큰 별자리입니다. 사자의 머리와 가슴을 그리는 별들이 거꾸로 된 물음표 모양으로 이어지는 것이 특징이에요. 그 끝에서 가장 밝게 빛나는 별 '레굴루스'는 라틴어로 '작은 왕'이라는 뜻입니다. 옛날 한여름에 해가 이 별자리 방향에 있었기 때문에, 사자자리는 가장 뜨거운 계절을 상징하게 되었습니다.
In Greek myth, a lion lived in the valley of Nemea whose hide no sword or arrow could pierce. The hero Heracles faced it as the first of his twelve labours and defeated it with his bare hands, and the lion rose into the sky as a constellation. Neighbouring Cancer was also the little crab that fought Heracles — so the two constellations became neighbours within the same hero's story.
It is the sign of those born from around 23 July to 22 August — a fire sign ruled by the Sun. It is said to stand for courage, confidence, generosity, and a warm heart that lights up everyone around it.
In Korea it is a large constellation seen high in the southern sky on spring nights. It is known for the stars of the lion's head and chest, which join in the shape of a backward question mark. The brightest star at its end, Regulus, means 'little king' in Latin. Because the sun once stood in this constellation in midsummer, Leo came to symbolise the hottest season.

사자자리의 아이는 액자 안이 아니라 액자 위에 세웠습니다. 위에 쌓인 게자리 작품 속, 줄에 매달린 친구에게 손을 뻗을 수 있도록요.
사자자리는 용기와 따뜻한 마음을 상징한다고 합니다. 하지만 용기가 꼭 크게 포효하는 것만은 아닐 거예요. 누군가 떨어질까 두려워할 때 가장 먼저 달려가 손을 내미는 것, 저는 그것이 가장 사자다운 용기라고 생각했습니다.
아이는 작고, 머리에 왕관도 없습니다. 그래도 활짝 웃으며 손을 뻗는 그 모습이 밤하늘 어느 별보다 환하게 빛나 보이기를 바랐습니다.
두 작품을 위아래로 함께 보아 주세요. 그리고 오늘은 여러분이 누군가에게 먼저 손을 내미는 사람이 되어 주시기를 바랍니다.
I placed the Leo child not inside the frame but on top of it — so that the child could reach up to the friend hanging from the rope in the Cancer piece stacked above.
Leo is said to stand for courage and a warm heart. But courage need not always be a mighty roar. Running first to offer a hand when someone is afraid of falling — I thought that was the most lion-like courage of all.
The child is small and wears no crown. Still, I hoped that this beaming face and outstretched hand would shine brighter than any star in the night sky.
Please look at the two works together, one above the other. And today, I hope you will be the one who reaches out first to someone.
