Constellation — Capricorn염소자리 Capricorn

Constellation — Capricorn is the Capricorn piece in the constellation series. A deep night sky fills the inside of the wooden frame, with a swirl of yellow, green and pink nebula at its centre. In front of it, a child in an apron stands on tiptoe, painting stars straight onto the night sky with a brush.

When the light hidden in the frame switches on, the work reveals another face. Dots scattered in the darkness light up one by one and join into the shape of Capricorn, and a small star twinkles at the tip of the child's brush too — as if the stars the child has dabbed on, dot by dot, have at last become a constellation.

Capricorn is the constellation of the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, and stands for the patience and perseverance to keep climbing without hurrying. In the small child's back lie a heart that never stops even when slower than others, and the belief that light returns only after crossing the darkest night.

The work asks: in a sky no one has drawn for you, what constellation are you carving?

The Story of Capricorn

Capricorn in myth

In Greek myth, the god Pan, fleeing the monster Typhon, leapt into a river and changed shape in a hurry: the half under water became a fish and the half above became a goat. That is why Capricorn is drawn as a 'sea-goat', a goat above and a fish's tail below. Another story says it honours Amalthea, the goat who nursed the infant Zeus.

The character of the sign

It is the sign of those born from around 22 December to 19 January — an earth sign ruled by Saturn. It is said to stand for perseverance, patience, responsibility, and the diligence of climbing step by step toward a goal.

Capricorn in the sky

One of the oldest constellations, recorded since Babylonian times, yet it has few bright stars and is hard to spot. In Korea it can be seen low in the southern sky from late summer into autumn. The Tropic of Capricorn takes its name from the fact that, long ago, the sun stood in this constellation at the winter solstice — so Capricorn can also be read as the starting point where light returns after the darkest time.

Artist's note

In making the constellation series, I wanted to give each child a sky of their own. To the Capricorn child, I gave a brush.

Capricorn is said to be a sign that climbs to the very end without hurrying — a heart that, even if a little slower than others, plants its feet firmly before a steep path and moves forward one step at a time. I thought a heart like that could carve a constellation of its own, rather than one drawn by someone else.

That is also why I hid a light in the frame. Just as dots unseen in the dark join into a single shape the moment the light comes on, the days we have quietly marked one by one will someday become a shining constellation.

If you are passing through the longest night, I hope you will rest a while in front of this work. The light always comes back.
