「별자리 — Libra」는 별자리 연작 가운데 천칭자리를 담은 작품입니다. 짙은 밤하늘 한가운데 푸른빛과 붉은빛이 뒤섞인 성운이 피어오르고, 그 아래 바닥에는 검은 옷을 입은 아이가 엎드리듯 몸을 낮춘 채 펼친 책장을 들여다보고 있습니다. 한쪽 구석에는 책 몇 권이 가지런히 기대어 서 있습니다.
모두가 잠든 밤, 아이는 홀로 무언가를 오래 생각하는 중입니다. 궁금한 마음과 조용한 대답, 옳다고 믿었던 것과 아팠던 일. 저마다의 무게를 지닌 마음들을 양쪽에 올려놓고, 어느 쪽으로도 기울지 않으려 애쓰는 작은 저울처럼 보입니다.
액자에 숨겨진 조명이 켜지면 밤하늘 곳곳에 별이 불을 밝히며 천칭자리의 모양이 떠오릅니다. 아이를 사이에 두고 양쪽에 흩어진 별들이 마치 저울의 두 접시처럼 아이를 내려다봅니다.
천칭자리는 낮과 밤의 길이가 같아지는 추분 무렵의 별자리로, 균형과 공정함, 조화를 상징합니다. 작품은 흔들리는 마음마저 나의 일부라는 것을 받아들이는 고요한 밤, 그리고 그 밤이 끝내 건네는 '이만하면 괜찮다'는 위로를 이야기합니다.
Constellation — Libra is the Libra piece in the constellation series. A nebula of mingled blue and red blooms in the middle of a dark night sky, and below it, on the floor, a child in black lies low, almost prone, peering into an open book. In one corner, a few books lean neatly against each other.
On a night when everyone else is asleep, the child is alone, thinking something over for a long time: questions and quiet answers, what was believed to be right and what hurt. Placing these feelings, each with its own weight, on either side, the child looks like a small set of scales trying not to tip either way.
When the light hidden in the frame comes on, stars light up across the night sky and the shape of Libra appears. The stars scattered on either side of the child look down on them like the two pans of a scale.
Libra is the constellation of the autumn equinox, when day and night are equal, and stands for balance, fairness and harmony. The work speaks of a quiet night of accepting that even a wavering heart is part of who we are — and of the comfort that night finally offers: 'This is good enough.'

천칭자리의 저울은 정의의 여신 아스트라이아가 들고 있던 것이라고 전해집니다. 인간 세상이 점점 다툼으로 어지러워지자 신들은 하나둘 하늘로 떠났지만, 아스트라이아는 마지막까지 사람들 곁에 남아 옳고 그름을 일러 주었다고 해요. 끝내 그녀마저 하늘로 올라 처녀자리가 되었고, 곁에 두고 간 저울이 천칭자리가 되었다고 합니다.
9월 23일 무렵부터 10월 22일 무렵에 태어난 사람의 별자리로, 공기의 별자리이며 금성이 지배 행성입니다. 균형과 공정함, 조화와 아름다움을 소중히 여기고, 사람과 사람 사이의 관계를 섬세하게 살피는 성향을 상징한다고 해요.
황도 12궁 가운데 유일하게 사람이나 동물이 아닌 '물건'을 그린 별자리입니다. 아주 옛날에는 이웃한 전갈자리의 집게발로 여겨지기도 했어요. 우리나라에서는 늦봄부터 여름 밤 남쪽 하늘에서 볼 수 있습니다. 옛날 추분 무렵 해가 이 별자리 방향에 있었기 때문에, 낮과 밤의 길이가 같아지는 '균형의 날'을 상징하는 별자리가 되었습니다.
The scales of Libra are said to have belonged to Astraea, goddess of justice. As the human world grew full of strife, the gods left for the heavens one by one, but Astraea stayed with people to the very last, telling right from wrong. When at last she too rose into the sky, she became Virgo, and the scales she left beside her became Libra.
It is the sign of those born from around 23 September to 22 October — an air sign ruled by Venus. It is said to stand for valuing balance, fairness, harmony and beauty, and for paying careful attention to the relationships between people.
It is the only sign of the zodiac that depicts an object rather than a person or an animal. Long ago it was even thought of as the claws of neighbouring Scorpio. In Korea it can be seen in the southern sky on late-spring and summer nights. Because the sun once stood in this constellation at the autumn equinox, it came to symbolise the 'day of balance', when day and night are equal.

천칭자리의 아이에게는 펼친 책 한 권을 선물했습니다. 모두가 잠든 밤, 홀로 바닥에 엎드려 무언가를 오래 생각하는 아이의 모습이 천칭자리와 닮았다고 생각했습니다.
살다 보면 마음속에 저울 하나를 놓고 밤새 이리저리 무게를 달아 보는 날이 있습니다. 옳다고 믿었던 것과 아팠던 일, 궁금한 마음과 아직 오지 않은 대답. 어느 쪽도 쉽게 내려놓을 수 없어 바늘은 오래 흔들립니다.
그런데 그 흔들림마저 나라는 것을 받아들이면, 이상하게도 마음이 조금 고요해집니다. 균형이란 흔들리지 않는 것이 아니라, 흔들리다가도 다시 제자리로 돌아오는 힘인지도 모릅니다.
조명이 켜지면 아이의 양쪽으로 별들이 떠오릅니다. 그 별들이 아이에게, 그리고 이 작품 앞에 선 여러분에게 이렇게 말해 주기를 바랍니다. 이만하면 괜찮다고.
To the Libra child, I gave an open book. I thought a child lying on the floor alone at night, thinking something over for a long time while everyone sleeps, resembled Libra.
In life there are days when we set a pair of scales in our hearts and weigh things back and forth all night: what we believed was right and what hurt us, our questions and the answers that haven't yet come. Neither side is easy to set down, so the needle trembles for a long time.
Yet when we accept that even the trembling is who we are, the heart strangely grows a little calmer. Perhaps balance is not never wavering, but the strength to return to our place after we waver.
When the light comes on, stars rise on either side of the child. I hope those stars will say this to the child, and to you standing before this work: this is good enough.
