「별자리 — Scorpio」는 별자리 연작 가운데 전갈자리를 담은 작품입니다. 푸른빛과 보랏빛 성운이 길게 흐르는 밤하늘 앞에서, 흰 러닝셔츠에 빨간 반바지를 입은 통통한 아이가 줄넘기를 하고 있습니다. 머리 위로 휘어진 하늘색 줄은 마치 커다란 하트 모양처럼 아이를 감싸고 있습니다.
아이는 눈을 질끈 감고 입술을 꽉 깨문 채 온 힘을 다해 뛰어오릅니다. 몇 번을 걸려 넘어졌는지 모르지만, 그래도 다시 줄을 하늘로 던지는 얼굴입니다. 찡그린 표정 속에 '멈추지 않겠다'는 뜨거운 마음이 고스란히 담겨 있습니다.

Constellation — Scorpio is the Scorpio piece in the constellation series. In front of a night sky streaming with blue and violet nebulae, a round-cheeked child in a white vest and red shorts is skipping rope. The sky-blue rope curving overhead wraps around the child like a great heart.
Eyes squeezed shut and lips bitten tight, the child leaps with all their strength. Who knows how many times they have tripped — yet this is a face that throws the rope to the sky once more. In that scrunched-up expression lies a burning heart that says, 'I won't stop.'
When the light hidden in the frame comes on, stars light up one by one in the sky beside the child, and a constellation curving like a scorpion's long tail appears. As if a star switches on with every jump, it is the moment the child's drops of sweat become stars in the night sky.
Scorpio holds a red heart-star at the centre of the summer night sky and stands for deep passion and a tenacity that never lets go. The work tells of dreams that grow one notch higher with each fall and each rising again — and of the hottest summer remaining as a constellation.

그리스 신화에서 사냥꾼 오리온은 세상의 모든 짐승을 사냥하겠다고 큰소리를 쳤다가, 대지의 여신이 보낸 작은 전갈에게 쏘여 쓰러졌다고 해요. 두 존재는 함께 하늘의 별자리가 되었지만, 지금도 전갈자리가 동쪽에서 떠오르면 오리온자리는 서쪽으로 몸을 숨깁니다. 그래서 두 별자리는 결코 밤하늘에 함께 있지 않는다고 하지요. 작은 존재가 거대한 상대를 이긴 이야기이기도 합니다.
10월 23일 무렵부터 11월 22일 무렵에 태어난 사람의 별자리로, 물의 별자리이며 화성과 명왕성이 지배 행성입니다. 깊은 열정과 강한 의지, 한번 마음먹은 일은 끝까지 해내는 집념, 그리고 겉보다 깊은 속마음을 상징한다고 해요.
우리나라에서는 여름 밤 남쪽 하늘 낮은 곳에서 S자로 길게 휘어진 모습을 볼 수 있어, 실제 전갈과 가장 닮은 별자리로 꼽힙니다. 전갈의 심장 자리에서 붉게 빛나는 별 '안타레스'는 '화성의 경쟁자'라는 뜻으로, 화성처럼 붉다고 해서 붙은 이름이에요. 동양에서도 이 별을 큰 불이라는 뜻의 '대화(大火)', 혹은 마음 별 '심성(心星)'이라 불렀습니다. 여름 밤하늘 한가운데 뜨거운 심장이 뛰고 있는 별자리입니다.
In Greek myth, the hunter Orion boasted that he would hunt every beast in the world, and was struck down by the sting of a small scorpion sent by the goddess of the earth. Both became constellations, but even now, when Scorpio rises in the east, Orion hides in the west — which is why the two are never seen in the night sky together. It is also a story of a small creature defeating a giant.
It is the sign of those born from around 23 October to 22 November — a water sign ruled by Mars and Pluto. It is said to stand for deep passion, strong will, the tenacity to see through whatever one sets one's mind to, and an inner heart deeper than it appears.
In Korea it can be seen low in the southern sky on summer nights, curving in a long S-shape — counted as the constellation that most resembles its namesake. The red star at the scorpion's heart, Antares, means 'rival of Mars', named for being as red as Mars. In East Asia, too, this star was called 'Great Fire' (大火) or the 'Heart Star' (心星). It is a constellation with a burning heart beating in the middle of the summer night sky.

전갈자리는 뜨거운 열정과 끝까지 놓지 않는 마음을 상징한다고 합니다. 줄에 걸려 넘어지고, 숨이 턱까지 차올라도 다시 줄을 하늘로 던지는 아이. 그 찡그린 얼굴이 세상에서 가장 반짝이는 표정이라고 생각했습니다.
아이 머리 위의 줄을 하트 모양으로 휘게 한 것은, 그 끈기가 결국 좋아하는 마음에서 나온다는 걸 말하고 싶어서였습니다. 좋아하니까 포기하지 않고, 포기하지 않으니까 한 칸씩 더 높이 뛰게 되지요.
조명이 켜지면 아이 곁에 전갈자리가 떠오릅니다. 여러분의 가장 뜨거웠던 여름도, 지금쯤 어느 밤하늘 한가운데 별자리가 되어 빛나고 있을 거예요.
To the Scorpio child, I gave a skipping rope. It reminded me of summer days in the yard as a child, dripping with sweat, determined to reach a hundred jumps.
Scorpio is said to stand for burning passion and a heart that never lets go. A child who trips on the rope, gasps for breath, and still throws the rope to the sky again — I thought that scrunched-up face was the most radiant expression in the world.
I curved the rope above the child's head into a heart because I wanted to say that such perseverance comes, in the end, from loving something. Because you love it, you don't give up; and because you don't give up, you leap a little higher each time.
When the light comes on, Scorpio rises beside the child. Your hottest summer, too, must be shining somewhere in the middle of the night sky by now, as a constellation of its own.
